Now, obviously these are very practical pieces of equipment for the nighttime expedition they were undertaking. But when methodically theological John is writing, I find it important to look beyond the literal meaning and examine what symbolism or deeper significance might emerge. We all face darkness in our lives. We all march forward sometimes to encounter the unknown, the threatening. We all experience fear and fragility. The questions are these: Whose light willilluminate your path after today? And, what will you do with those weapons in your hand right now?
